Adhesive coating-laminating

Web coating and laminating is at the central manufacturing process of a variety of materials such as films, papers, foils, and textiles. The process involves the application of coatings, adhesives, or laminates onto a continuous web substrate to impart specific properties such as barrier protection, printability, adhesives, etc.

Production Methods

Prior to being coated, the primary substrate is unwound and processed through various pre-treatment stages, including cleaning and surface preparation to ensure proper adhesion of coatings or laminates. These treatments may involve corona treatment, flame treatment, or chemical priming to enhance surface energy and promote bonding of materials like polyethylene, polyester, and other polymer films.

Once pre-treated, the web enters the coating station, where a solution or hot meltcoating material is applied uniformly onto one or both sides of the substrate. The coatingmaterial may contain additives such as pigments, fillers, or functional chemicals to impart specific properties to the final product. Several application methods are availableat Pyradia, including gravure coating, Mayer rod coating, KOR coating, Reverse Roll coating, saturation or slot die coating, depending on the requirements of the application, such as coating type, thickness, uniformity, rheology, viscosity, etc.

Following coating, the web enters the drying and curing stages of production to evaporate solvents or water and solidify the coating material. Pyradia offers a full range of convection dryers, flotation dryers, infrared dryers, etc., depending on the nature of the coating and substrate.

After drying and curing, the coated web may proceed to the laminator station where a laminate substrate is combined with the primary substrate, bonding two or more webs together to create a composite structure with enhanced properties such as strength, barrier performance, or appearance.

Finally, the laminated web undergoes post-processing steps such as slitting, trimming, and winding to achieve the desired roll dimensions and packaging requirements. Quality control measures, including thickness measurement, coating weight analysis, and visual inspection, are carried out throughout the process to ensure product consistency and adherence to specifications.

In conclusion, web coating and laminating are complex manufacturing processes that involve precise control of various parameters to produce high-quality materials with specific properties for a wide range of applications.

Frequently asked questions

What is adhesive coating?

It is the uniform application of an adhesive onto a continuous web, ahead of laminating two or more substrates together.

Which coating heads are used for adhesives?

It depends on the adhesive (water based, solvent based, hot melt): reverse roll, knife-over-roll or slot die, for an even deposit at the right thickness.

How does drying work after coating?

After coating, the web passes through dryers (convection, infrared, floatation) to drive off the solvent or water, then curing cross-links the adhesive.

What is the difference between coating and laminating?

Coating deposits the adhesive; laminating then bonds the substrates. The two run in sequence on the same line.

Is web coating the same as adhesive coating?

Coating is the umbrella term for applying any layer to a web; adhesive coating is the specific case where the product applied is an adhesive.
