Aluminum Solution Heat Treating
Aluminum solution heat treating is a heating method which is done to increase the strength of an alloy. Aluminum alloys gain strength by subjecting the aluminum material to a series of processing steps commonly referred to as solution heat treatment, quenching, and aging. During the first step, the alloy is heated at a high temperature over a precise time period. The aluminum solution heat treating process creates small particles that derive from the aluminum matrix. These particles, called precipitates, have an influence on the malleability of the material. The alloy is then cooled rapidly or quenched by immersing it in a solution. Water or a water-glycol solution is commonly used in this process. The time period involved in the treatment process is referred to as aging.
